1)Installed sp3 (upgraded from sp2 media) from a legal copy(s) of windows xp (pro and home)

a) Sp2 clean install + new updates + restart + sp3 install = no updates found

b) Sp2 clean install + sp3 install = no updates found* (except in the case of 1 computer running xp pro with office 07 installed, only office updatesbut NO OS Updates!

Tried the SP3 update 'fix'http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 Used the manual fix, on one machine and the automatic fix on another


3) Used the Stand Alone update agenthttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928, same result ! no updates

4)Checked ( system info from the command line ) all installed patches against critical kb… and found them missing!! (this includes All Oct 11 Critical Patches)

IFthe Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer, receives its .cab file that reflects all the current patches for xp, and gives me the green light, the problem might be with Microsoft Update itself, not providing the updates??

Ms update is working for office components but not the OS!!, If you choose the 'Optional Update' tab there are missing 'optional' programs e.g. .net 3.5 that i would usually get a prompt for, the 'stand alone install'

6) Have 5 legit xp machines that have the same problem(4) ms home and (1) ms pro


UPDATE:

1) Just installed xp mode on a windows 7 box, and there are 80 updates !! (its sp3). i know its not related but interesting

2) Installed .net 3.5 on one of the xp machines. tested the updates. Result: NO UPDATES, no windows cardspace etc.

3) Note: There is always this option, to download the update in .iso form

Wmic Command must be in CMD Prompt to use (type exactly after the prompt)
(to find the os name, type)
wmic os get name
(to find the installed Service Pack type)
wmic os get servicepackmajorversion
(to find the the list of patches and updates type: note: (QFE = Quick Fix Engineering)
wmic qfe list brief
(to find the services installed type: )
wmic service list
(to find everything :) Type:
wmic product get vendor, name, version, installdate, packagecache, description, identifyingnumber
note: if you leave off 'identifyingnumber' just remove the comma or you will get a syntax error.. and so on !!

Background: Systems have new hard drives, installed on a protected lan, no current or former production machines attached, oem software and codes that match, installed with the system

Note: ie 8 installed default settings

Note: clean installs started after this Friday have this problem, older machines that were behind on updates still update
